Our group ski tomorrow is cancelled! It’s too cold!
If you do venture out, please check out the below safety considerations:
— Likely smaller group but as you all know Nordic skiers are a hardy bunch and do not be surprised to have good attendance
— Pay close attention to dress and sign of getting cold , be vigilant,
— Nose tip , ear lobes, finger tips might need monitoring for signs of frost nip.
— Long downhills is where we tend to get the most cold
— People wearing buffs or some other item which they might cover their mouth and or nose with to breath through should do so to help warm the air before it enters the airways.
— Always err on the side of caution if you feel your session should be cut short
— Avoid skiing at a pace where people might breathe very hard or sweat, moisture is not our friend when it is cold.
— Skiing in puffy jackets is a consideration or even add Alpine pants.
— If you carry hand warmers activate them at session start so that they will be warm by the time someone might need them
— Water bottles do better if carried upside down in the water belts , less likely to freeze the top from which drinking happens
— There is specific cold weather skin tape that works very well, bought mine at Stussi don’t know if Village ski shop has it but can order online also.. Duct tape and the like is a horrible choice , just rips the skin when it is removed.
— Air Trim masks work very well, also online order. designed for cold weather exercise.
