Trail Etiquette

The following xc ski trail etiquette should be considered as a way for Silver Hares to conduct themselves when on the trails, and as an educational tool. Many xc skiers may not be aware of these commonly accepted rules. If you meet someone who is not, please do the right thing. Lead by example, encourage good behaviour and avoid any unpleasantness. This is especially true when wearing our Silver Hares Toques or Headbands, we are building a positive reputation in the community.

  • When I overtake a slower skier I call out “track” or I  move to the left and go around them.
  • When faster skiers come up behind me I will move to the right and let them pass.
  • If I meet another skier head on I will pass to the right.
  • If a trail is too narrow for two skiers to pass, I will wait until the other skier passes.
  • I know that skiers coming down a hill have the right of way.
  • If I am skiing down a hill, I will stay in control so I can avoid other skiers or obstacles.
  • If I need to stop, or if I fall, I will move off the trail to allow clear passage for other skiers.
  • I will move off the trail if I want to chat or visit with my others.
  • I will only take my pets on designated ski trails.
  • I will not litter and I will pack out what I packed in.
  • I will say a friendly ‘hello’ when passing other skiers.
  • I will respect trail signs and ski in designated areas only.
